Want to hear a different perspective on news?
This is one of the places to hear it.
Tonight there was an extensive segment on Al-Masri's story, and how the American government actively tried to suppress the German government from investigating CIA operatives for their crimes against Al-Masri's human rights. The coverage was almost funny, as they pointed out nearly with a sneer that the new Wilileaks 'news dump' revelations about this story was really nothing new.
I had to chuckle in agreement; most of the Wikileaks information is NOT news to those of us who have been paying attention.
But there's more than just this story.
Superb, riveting reporting of tens of thousands of students protesting in the UK against tuition raises, and strikingly phrased to point out how the 'liberal democrats' in the UK have sold out to the rich. [does that meme sound familiar?]
Well editing, flowing material.
They cover so much in an hour.
Coverage of the the air traffic controller strike in Spain, the sentencing of CEOs in the Parmalot scandal in Italy, interesting.
The fact that 61% of Norwegians think their government is corrupt, and that the poor are likely to have to pay bribes to get social services, shocking. Corruption in governments re: human trafficking in Europe, even more shocking.
To provide some contrast, there's a segment on the idealism of students in Afghanistan as they struggle with trying to understand how to bring ethical government to their endangered nation.
I can't think of any US "news outlet" does this type of consistent reporting, except maybe Democracy Now. While Deutche Welle is rebroadcast through the local NPR affiliate here in NH, NPR simply does not rise to this level of coverage.
The radio show is a magazine format show: there's more depth on their web site:

I think it's well worth a listen, the European perspective I find very refreshing.
Here's a link to the latest broadcast .. and yes, it's in English ..

Some will point out bias evident in the coverage, that there's scant coverage of some of the very worst issues of oppression inside Germany against the Turkish and gypsy populations, and a marked hesitancy to take on their own neo-Nazi demons, but in my estimation, I'd say compared to most US news outlets, Deutche Welle is impressive.
Give it a try.
